One of PopSci’s most popular vintage covers, this painting by Edgar F. Wittmack appears to show a man watching a volcanic eruption in progress. In fact, the event this cover commemorates wasn’t a true eruption, but the intentional detonation of some 6,000 pounds of gunpowder. The event was put on purely for entertainment purposes, and meant to evoke Mount Lassen’s actual eruption in 1915.
