“The Welder” is one of Popular Science’s most iconic covers—and the second of two covers created for the magazine by the famous American painter Norman Rockwell. Against the background of a richly appointed library and the foreground of an artfully cluttered worktable, a ruddy old man works to repair a teapot by blowing through a welding apparatus to feed its flame. The kitten sitting atop his shoulder is seemingly so intrigued by the process it ignores the caged bird hanging just behind them.
