Like most of the covers painted by Edgar F. Wittmack for Popular Science, this Depression-era scene ignores the realities of American life in favor of imagining a brighter future. Amphibious tanks, this picture posits, could one day keep explorers safe and secure as they trudged through the wilderness recording images and sound for posterity. Passengers look calm and dry as their bright orange vehicle hoists itself out of a muddy river—and right into the path of a tiger who’s ready to pounce.
